Support Prop 42
To the Editor:
I am writing to urge your support for Proposition 42, the Traffic Congestion Improvement Act, on the March 5, 2002 ballot. Proposition 42 is needed to reduce traffic congestion, to improve the quality and safety of our roads and bridges, and to reverse the decades-long decline of investment in California's vital transportation system - all accomplished without increasing taxes. Proposition 42 is supported by a broad and bipartisan coalition including the Governor, Democratic and Republican state legislators, transportation agencies, city and counties, business groups, labor, and transportation interest - including the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Proposition 42 would amend the state constitution to direct that all existing sales tax revenues from gasoline sales, about $1 billion annually, be spent exclusively in transportation improvement projects. This would boost the amount of money that is available for needed highway and transit projects and for a growing backlog of roads and bridge repair and maintenance needs throughout the state. The end result would be more and better transportation facilities, less congestion and improved safety. All of this would combine to improve the state's economic competitiveness and quality of life. I urge you to support Proposition 42.

About recession
To the Editor:
Tom Dashle and the Democrats want to take more away from us by increasing taxes. Bush wants to put more money into circulation by lowering taxes because, "if we ain't got it, we can't spend it, and if we don't have it to spend fewer things will be made by fewer workers, resulting in unemployment checks, instead of paychecks, and a deepening recession." I vote for Bush's plan.
